Welcome Week
Welcome Week is a great opportunity to learn all about the Royal Medical Society, what we offer, and what you can gain from being a member during your time at medical school.
​
We host a number of events during the week, including the infamous White Coat Pub Crawl, the Medical Societies Fair and the annual Freshers’ Address and social. We hope these will give you a taster of what we have planned throughout the year.
Many of our events are situated in our own private rooms above the student union in Potterrow. We aim to give you the best experience and make your first week at university unforgettable, so be sure to attend as many of our events as you can!

Our Council also assists with Edinburgh Medical School Open Days and Post-Offer Visit Days, so you can chat to us before you even come to university!

Joining the RMS
All medical students can join the RMS, which entitles you to use of the RMS rooms and facilities, entry to our exam and clinical skills tutorials, the chance to apply for Travel and Study funding, discounts on events, revision resources and more. You can apply for membership in the office with our secretary or by using our online application form.

Sports and Societies Fair

As well as the countless university sports clubs and societies, medical students in Edinburgh run their own medics’ societies. The medics’ sports clubs accommodate the fuller medical timetable and are a relaxed, fun way to enjoy a sport without worrying about commitment or skill. You can attend training and matches if and when you are free and they provide a great way to meet students from other year groups. Societies are related to medical specialities or areas of volunteering. If there is a particular area of medicine that you are interested in, you can join the society and head along to their events.
Many of the medics’ sports clubs and societies will be at the Welcome Week sports and societies fairs, run in conjunction with the MSC. Come along to meet the students involved in these clubs and societies, find out more about them and join any that interest you!

White Coat Pub Crawl
12 September 2023, Bristo Square
Your first social as a class of medical students will take place on the Tuesday night of Welcome Week! With you wearing your white coats and the council in surgical scrubs, we will take you on a tour of some of the city’s finest (and otherwise) student establishments… 300 medics clubbing to the wee hours, all dressed in white coats, is a sight to behold. Don’t miss this brilliant opportunity to meet your class and kick off your time in Edinburgh in style!

Freshers’ Address & ABC Social
TBC, RMS Rooms
Last year we welcomed Dr Paul Mills, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and past RMS President, to deliver our 2018 Freshers’ Address. His hilarious talk took us through some of the things new students can expect from our time in Edinburgh and a medical career, as well as sharing some entertaining tips, inspiring memories and reassurance that a great six years lie ahead!
This was followed by the annual ABC (Anything But Cups) social, including club guest list, where we saw some very creative drinking vessels for the night!
